    Hello all,

    I'm using an amended version of the 'Church' theme, which in turn is a child them of the 'Omega' theme (https://wordpress.org/themes/omega) and I'm having issues with the alt tags on my images.

    Basically, they don't seem to want to work and I have no idea why. Without getting deep down and dirty with the php (of which I am a complete novice), I've tried everything within WP...

    I'm really at a loss at what to do. please help!

    The site is here: http://www.itstoolshow.co.uk/

    Hey shakersinthedark,

    Could you give me a specific example of which images on your site aren't working? I'm looking at your exhibitors page, and the sponsor logos seem to work fine.

    Luke,

    thanks for getting back to me so promptly.

    I'm talking about the header image (which has a title tag but no alt) and the main image on the front page (which has the beginnings of the alt tag)...

    Hi shakersinthedark,

    This will be handled by your theme. If you want to add alt tags in, you just need to make a child theme (which is actually really easy). Once you have, copy the header.php file from the current theme into the child theme, then edit the child theme's header.php.

    There's a great child theme tutorial here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

    Hi Luke,

    Thanks again for getting back to me.

    Unfortunately, I originally tried creating a child theme as this is always my preference when creating a site from another theme but it just messed everything up - it basically moved the formatting around and changed it to the point where I couldn't have used it whether serious ammendments which i don't have the time to do.

    Is there a way of amending the php template files in the theme to add alt tags to these images directly?

    Since you're already using a child theme, you'll have been getting into the whole grandchild theme issue. You may be better off forking the child theme so as to avoid any original child theme updates overwriting your custom work.

    So either in the original child theme (Church) or your new forked theme, open the functions.php file. Add the following to the bottom of the first function in the functions.php (church_setup) file, just above the closing brace:

    remove_action('omega_header', 'omega_branding');
    add_action('omega_header', 'its_branding');

    Then, after the add_action line, paste in this new replacement branding function, I've put it at pastebin:

    http://pastebin.com/J0BfsXpj

    That should provide an alt tag containing the site description. Feel free to change it to something of your liking :)

    Hey Dave, thanks so much for putting this code together for me it really is appreciated - sorry for the massive delay in replying... other jobs overtook this issue!

    Nonetheless, I've applied the changes to the functions.php file and unfortunately, it still doesn't seem to work. Apologies for abusing your kindness but would you be able to have a look at the code below to see whether I've implemented the code incorrectly? Specifically, the alt tag I really want to work is the top logo image ... Thanks again!

    Looks like you didn't add the function in the right place. Remove the function its_branding() and add this new one where I've indicated. I amended it a little from the original:
