• I have multiple self-hosted blogs using various themes in WordPress. I have no problem logging in to my dashboard, however once I add a new post and paste text into the post area, I can no longer get an active cursor within the editor and therefore cannot format text, upload images, add links, or anything. I am effectively locked out of my blog in terms of posting anything new.

I have three blogs with three different themes and three different versions of WordPress. The only thing in common is my computer, yet the same thing happens when I use another computer. All three blogs won’t allow me to edit posts or essentially create new blogs.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    what are you pasting from?

I originally pasted text from Word 2007, but realizing there could be a formatting conflict, I deleted that paste and pasted from Notepad. I have recently found that if I save draft, I can get a cursor for one operation, like a page break, but then no more. If I press save draft again it reverts to the original.

I also found that when I get a cursor and try to upload an image, that while it won’t insert into the document, it does load into the media library. Unfortunately, I can not then insert from the media library, so I net the same result.

trey it in the html editor – not visual and see

When I go into the html editor it has allowed me to insert the picture, but I don’t know html and there’s no apparent font size control and the font in the preview pane is teeny, tiny. There is just something wrong with the entire process. I’ve never had to do any of this before. It was simple and straightforward.

    What could be wrong?

Have you installed any plugins recently which could be causing a conflict? The post/page editor uses a lot of javascript… maybe a new plugin is conflicting with it??

I only have two plugins, Akismet and Sexy Bookmarks. Would you recommend deactivating them? They were in place when I wrote the first ten blog posts and there were no problems, but at this point I’ll try anything.

Well, it’s just funny that it was working at one point, and then all of a sudden it stopped working correctly. Honestly, 98% of the time problems arise from something the user has done. It’s best to start with the simple stuff.. and begin ruling out obvious possibilities.

Yeah, if you only have two, deactivate them both. I’m pretty sure Sexy Bookmarks uses javascript, but I’ve never heard of this conflict.

Deactivate, clear your browsers cache, close your browser. Then re-open your admin panel and see if you can edit anything BEFORE re-activating your plugins.

Well it’s fixed. I’m not sure how or why, but for now it works like it’s supposed to. First I re-booted my computer just in case and that didn’t help. Then I de-activated the plugins and that didn’t help. But after I cleared my browsers cache, and logged back in it was as if I had a brand new installation of WordPress. Oh, by the way, I did update to the most recent version of WordPress in the middle of this process. And with re-activated plugins, everything is still working fine.

Thanks Josh and Samuel B for walking me through the process even though I’m not sure what fixed it.

Just for others who may have this problem, even with the fix on blog #1, when I went to blog #2 I still had all the original problems. What I tried may seem obvious to some, but it surprised me. I logged into my blog admin in Firefox and everything works perfectly. I can do everything I should be able to do and I have access to all functions. Yet when I go back and log in through Internet Explorer 9, nothing works and the editor is all locked up.

I know what browser I’ll be using in the future.

    Music to my ears!!
