Great Plug-In! I’m just trying to set it up for a community garden site.

I’m curious why the two different kinds of volunteer opportunities can’t be displayed on the same page.

    AND

Why it’s not possible to automatically send out an e-mail notification to our membership when new volunteer opportunities are posted.

Many of our members are older, and, while they all have e-mail addresses, aren’t in the habit of visiting the site unless somehow prompted. I get that such a feature might be open to abuse but most hosts police spammy activities quite actively and would likely jump all over improper usage. Our membership is small and need for volunteers, infrequent so the risk of running afoul of such rules is low.

If native categories were supported by Wired Impact Volunteer Management then it would be pretty easy to rig up a send event using a plugin like Ultimate Member. Since categories are a pretty fundamental feature of WordPress, it seems like adding that frequently requested feature would be fairly easy.

Like I said just curious. Thought I’d ask before looking for other options.

These are really great questions. I’ll address them one at a time.

I’m curious why the two different kinds of volunteer opportunities can’t be displayed on the same page.

There might be a few different ways to read this question, but I think you’re asking why we can’t simply list all of the volunteer opportunities together as one group. The biggest issue has to do with ordering. One-time volunteer opportunities can be listed intuitively by the date and time that the opportunity occurs. For flexible opportunities, those don’t have set dates and times, so it’s hard to know where to list them when bunched together with the one-time opportunities. We could potentially build a system that allows them all to be ordered in a customized way, but that gets very tedious if a lot of volunteer opportunities exist.

We’re always open to feedback, so if you have any ideas please let us know.

It sounds like you’re looking for something more similar to an email marketing tool like Mailchimp, Constant Contact or Campaign Monitor. For many of those tools, they do allow you to set up automated RSS email campaigns when new content is published. On your site, an RSS feed is being generated at http://www.pacg.ca/feed/?post_type=volunteer_opp with each new volunteer opportunity. In case you’d like to look at a tool like this, here’s an idea of how it works in Mailchimp. The approach would vary by tool, but that should give you an idea.

We totally agree that this would be a valuable feature and it’s definitely on our radar. We track feature requests internally and I’ll make sure to add another vote for this one.

Let us know if you have any other questions. We’re happy to help out.

    Thanks Jonathan,

I did manage to get both short codes functioning in a single page. There’s a big ugly gap in the middle of the page but at least it works. I may end up in limiting all opportunities to the non-specific kind. If there’s a specific date or time, that can be relayed in the description field.

I think I just found a fairly elegant solution in the ‘Better Notifications for WP’ plug-in. It allows me to send out a notification to any number of roles whenever a post is made in ‘Wired Impact Volunteer Management.’

We could potentially build a system that allows them all to be ordered in a customized way, but that gets very tedious if a lot of volunteer opportunities exist.

I could see where that would be a problem. We’re a tiny group so wouldn’t see more than a dozen ‘opportunities’ in a single year.

We’re always open to feedback, so if you have any ideas please let us know.

I wonder if it would be workable to simply post all opportunities, regardless of type, by creation date to a blogroll style page. The actual target date of ‘One-Time’ Ops could still be displayed in the output. It wouldn’t be perfect but certainly better than having Ops divided by type.

Thanks a ton for the response and details Brian.

Thanks a ton for letting us know the approach you went with. I could see this being helpful for others who may need similar functionality.

This is definitely helpful feedback. I’m going to note it internally so we can refer back to it as we roadmap future improvements for the plugin.

Thank you again for the thoughtful input. I’m going to mark this as resolved, but don’t hesitate to let us know if any other questions come up.
