• Hi!
My name is Jacob. I’m a photographer and I want to create a website to promote my work. I got a domain and hosting and I have found a template that I would like to use (shuttershot). But there is the thing- I have no idea how to customize it! I have watched a short tutorial online and I don’t even see options that are used in the video (in the video it’s WP 3.5). Can somebody help me to create a simple website with 4 tabs (home, about me, gallery, contact)? It’s a black magic to me…

  • Hi,
to make a main menu, you get first on your dashboard>appearance>menus,
then you get on the page to creat menus or just one menu, so the menu basically it contain as you have mentionned different other components like pages, categories, links.. ( you can set and choose the components that you want to use by clicking on a screen options tab on the top right corner of the page to creat menu. so you select what you want as component, and for the tabs you mentionned you will need just pages.
to creat pages, you get to dashboard>pages>add new
the home tab is creat by default, you have to set it to display, as your choice, your latest posts so it will work as a blog, or to display a static page so in your case i think it will be a static page.
the gallery and contact pages need plugins to be ready to work, so you will get a look on some youtube videos, just 3 to 5 max videos, to get an idea how to choose and search for plugins, and also some for menu customization, the visual aspect will talk with you better, and if you need to customize the form of your menu, search for css code free for menu or also try to look for on youtube.
    i hope that can help
    cheers

I googled for free wordpress themes and I found it… Not sure if it was from this page. I thought it doesn’t matter where i get it from as long as it’s wordpress…

The wordpress.org support forums are meant for the core application, themes and plugins that are distributed on wordpress.org. We do not support themes downloaded from elsewhere.

It should be although some themes don’t handle custom menus well or like other themes.

Try looking at the Meny User Guide too.

Ehh… I’m usually not that bad in technical stuff, but this is just beyond me! I have watched a couple of tutorials on youtube, but its just not working :/ Do you know any nice free (or cheap) theme for a photographers on which you could guide me step-by-step what to do?

Have you tried looking at some of the photoblogging themes in https://wordpress.org/themes/
