I know I can use a link or an image and display a youtube video in fancybox, but I was wondering about an imbedded iframe like this:

    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

My client was the still to be auto-generated by youtube, but wants it to open up in an overlay (like fancybox).

I am not sure if this is even possible….is it possible?

Youtube does create stills automatically but you’ll have to find the proper URLs. You could do this by opening your Youtube account and displaying the list of your own movies. Then right-click a still and choose “Display image…” or similar menu option in the browser.

In the case of your clients video, some examples:

Notice the unique movie ID in there, the rest of the URL is usually the same…

I don’t know if these URLs will always remain the same. Nor do I know if there are stills available with a neat Play button icon over them like the Flash or HTML5 player shows.

In any case, using these stills could make your clients life a bit simpler 😉

Thank you soo much! That really helped.
    It solves it perfectly!!

A possibly even easier way is cool video gallery – this uses fancybox as well. But you just plug in the ID of the video and the CVG plugin retrieves the still image for you (and the description of the clip which it puts into the link’s title atribute). I have a test example here (I did modify the CVG plugin slightly to output that youtube description as text rather than insert in the title)
