If this file were writable..

When I had Word Press on Yahoo, I was able to edit my templates in the dashboard automatically. I ditched Yahoo and went with A Small Orange. (great service, btw)

I stalled my blog and when I go to theme editor it tells me: If this file were writable you could edit it.

I read on here that I have to change my htaccess permission to 666. I went to manage – files in the Dashboard, but it said no .htaccess does not exist.

So I wrote A Small Orange, and they were very fast. They downloaded a blank page and changed my permissions for me. Great.

I went back to my blog, things are still not writable. When I click manage- files the htaccess page is blank. I am not sure what should be there or what my next step is.

Please help!

Use whatever program you FTPed with to go back in and change the permissions. Usually you can right click on the file and change the permissions that way. You can’t change permissions in through WP.

and be aware that chmod 777 and/or 666 is a security risk, NO MATTER WHO you are hosted with. It is NOT a good idea to leave those permissions set that way for extended periods of time.

In fact, if you have an ftp client that you use to chmod, youre just as able to download the files, made local edits, and then upload those newly edited files.

I’m hosted there too, so let me tell you what I did. You have to change the permissions on the theme files (just the php ones) and then you can edit them in the internal wordpress editor. I CHMOD them to 666 while I was working on them, and then I change them back.

Of course, you could do as whooami suggested and download them, make changes and upload them again, but I like using the internal editor because I can switch between all the templates I want to change things on without having to download them all and open them all. I guess it’s a personal preference thing.

Thank you! Orb- I did what you said. I changed everything back to a secure setting and just changed the permissions on the theme I am using. It worked! Thanks so much!!!
