Support » Plugin: Video Background » IE11 + Safari Issues

  • I am currently experiences issues with getting the video to play within different browsers on different devices.

Within IE11 on my PC, neither the .mp4 video, .webm video or the fall back image are displaying, however on Chrome the video is displayed.

On my iPhone and iPad using Safari, the fall back image displays correctly but the video does not load.

I have also tried viewing the site on a MacBook using both Safari and Chrome. The video took a long time to load in Safari but was significantly using Chrome.

My .mp4 and .WebM files are 111MB and 91MB respectively and the fall back image is 24KB.

What can I do in order to make the video display correctly in all browsers?

    Hi agallagher,

Thank you for using Video Background!

The issue is most certainly stemming from the videos, since their file sizes are over 100mb. Please refer to the FAQs; we recommend videos no larger than 15mb.

Some browsers will not even load the video background if the file is that large. Please try using smaller size video files to see if that fixes the issue.

    Hi Blake,

I viewed another support question raised a while ago that was similar to this where you suggested trying some test videos and a fall back image to see whether the problem was with the browser or the encoding of the video.

I downloaded these and tried it on my site and the issue still occurred. These videos were 5mb at the largest so I don’t think its solely down to the file sizes of my videos.

When I debug the page within IE, I am seeing an error related to an extra <body> tag, however, I cannot find the extra tag within the HTML.

Could this be the cause of the issue? If so, what can I do about it?

    Hi agallagher,

Thanks for taking action and looking through the previous tickets. It helps a lot from a troubleshooting stand point 🙂

If you’d like to provide a link to the site where you are using the default video files and fallback image, I’d be glad to take a look and see if anything looks out of place.
