Removing the simpleTOC plugin removes the display error. The solution in the meantime has just been to remove any additional formatting from the heading text. I completely changed how this plugin works while traversing the headings. Before my changes I tried to reconstruct the headline, and now I add the anchor id slug the already styled headlines. I also removed all regex and switched to DOMDocument. * I use a testpage with all sorts of special headings like a link with a bold word, an italic word, ellipsis, umlauts and custom classes and so on. I hope it works much better now.
