I want to change the way the blog page works

Currently the blog page works by listing several different blog entries one right after the other. Since my blog entries are on varied topics, it’s a bit confusing navigating from one entry of a category to another entry of the same category.

The way I’d rather it worked was to list just one entry, followed by a list of links to other entries in the same category in chronological order, and a list of other categories. Something like this:

This is the text of the blog…
More text
More text
End of the text

Blog entries in this category
link1
link2
link3

Other blog categories
cat1
cat2
cat3

Does anyone know of a theme or a plugin, or some simple modifications to do this? I’m assuming setting the “blog pages show at most X posts” setting to “1” will solve part of the problem. But how about the category-related stuff that I want to do down at the bottom?

Before the Loop in your index.php you could add

<?php
echo '<p>This is the text of the blog...</p>'
echo '<p>blah blah blah...</p>'
echo '<p>Blog entries in this category</p>'
query_posts('cat=3&posts_per_page=3);
?>

After your Loop add

<?php
wp_list_categories('title_li=Other blog categories&exclude=3');
?>
