all I want to do is have a link pop up a simple PDF, but I have no experience with iframe or anything like that and I cannot find any references to what shortcut code I need to paste into my site! any help?

No shortcode. Just create a link in your post to that PDF file and make sure you enable the PDF option (with Auto-detection!) on Settings > Media.
