Good evening everybody (as it is in my timezone).

Guys, I hired someone on Fiverr to make some customization on my WordPress blog and he asked for ftp and wp-access … Since I don’t have a good knowledge in these things, is it safe? and how to let him lead the job without any risk?

    Best regards,
    Yazeed.

What sort of customisation? I wouldn’t give away FTP access unless it was absolutely necessary.

To move the search box to right and customize it with css.

Great advice Mr.Andrew, I appreciate it. So the better way is to give him user access and I conduct the uploading process right?

By the way, which user role should I give him?

You’ll need to give the developer access to edit your theme files – Though it might be tricky to create a Child Theme (the right way to make these modifications) if they don’t have access to install plugins too.

Giving FTP and WP admin access to a developer you hired for customization is how it usually goes.

But do make a new FTP account and a new WordPress user ( administrator role ), so after he’s done you simply remove that user.

If he has good reviews on Fiverr there’s really no reason to not trust him with that information.

Well, but isn’t it risky to give him administrator since he also have the ability to remove me and own the website?

That sounds like a general problem of hiring people. Maybe you need to take this up with a lawyer.

Of course he can remove you, but does he have a reason to.

Is he a scammer who tries to get WP admin and FTP information by posing as a developer on Fiverr or is he a legitimate developer who only needs the access so he can do the customization project and be paid for it.

There are reviews on Fiverr, if he has good reviews he’s legitimate and there’s no reason to be scared.

You could of course send the theme to him, he’ll set it up on his local installation, handle the modification and send you the files.

But he’ll most likely ask for more money, since he’s no longer doing a customization on your installation, he’s setting up a new installation and then doing the customization. He’ll probably want about $30 more ( just a guess, no idea what the devs on Fiverr generally charge for their time ).

Great .. Great answer, that was really useful. I’m now convinced just to send him my theme then get it after being customized. Though I will pay more but that will save me from an enormous STUN if my 3 full-time months effort vanished. (Not a disparagement but Fiverr developers are good persons).

    Thanks for help!
    Best,
