• Hi All,

I’m setting up a website with wordpress (in Dutch, but language doesn’t matter right now) for a friend of mine who is going to bike 3000 km in 30 days through Europe to collect money for the Cancer foundation.

I offered my help in building the site for him and wanted to use wordpress

But i got lost in the structure

I installed wordpress + thesis theme

i created a number of new pages (still no problem)

but i get stuck with the home page… I created a post on the home page (the page you are redirected to when you click the title)

But when i add a new post i get the complete article also on the home page…

HOW is it advisable to set this up?

    – create a new page called home?
    – change the current home name in blog?

How do you guys do that?

I just want these static pages that are there right now and have a dynamic blog page that gets all new posts (not the whole post maybe but a few lines and a read further link…)

I’d like all the new posts to be picked up by the rss which i have running through feedburner

So you see i’m kind of lost in the structure and i hope someone can help me out

    the site is here <ahref=”http://www.rijdenvoorkanker.nl”>www.rijdenvoorkanker.nl

    thanks a lot

well….which page do you want to show when you first go to the site? A static page? Or a blog page?

If you want a blog (dynamic page) as the front page…then in settings->reading you should have it set so your front page is ‘your latest posts’

If you want a static page….like a greeting or whatever…then use the page editor to make pages like you have been. Set up the welcome page, and make another page for your blogs.

Then in settings->reading set ‘a static page’ and then select the welcome page you made to be your ‘Front page’ and set whatever page you just made to be your ‘Posts page’

That should take care of getting things in the right place. If you don’t like how the posts page looks, you may have to select a different template from the right side of the page editor. Or even make a new template (don’t worry, it’s not as hard as it sounds).

    dellplumo,

You have what you want if you place a Read More in every post starting with the first one that is on the frontpage now.In the Visual Editor that would mean clicking in your post at the spot where you want to break it off and then in the top button bar nr 4 rom the right hand side.
Then also a thumbnail image would still be visible in the shortened post if placed near the top. Images can easily be uploaded/inserted when writing a post.
Under Admin/Settings/Reading you can set the number of posts displayed on the front page; standard is 10 I think. So nr 11 would generate a previous posts link in a good theme. Otherwise you can add that later.

The other way is to use the_excerpt instead of the_content in the index.php file in your theme directory but then you can not have images and the front page would become a bitt dull.
