I’m trying to install WordPress on my laptop to get some experience working with it and I can’t get it to talk to the MySQL. I installed MySQL on my laptop and added a “wordpress” schema. I created a user and gave that user all privileges within the “wordpress” schema. I also used the mysql command line utility to make sure I could log in. the wp-config.php file was modified with the DB name and DB user and password parameters and I used “od -c” to dump the file to see if there were any hidden, unprintable characters that might be causing the problem. But every time I go to wp-admin/install.php, I get an error page which that says “This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.” I have checked and double checked, and none of the above is applicable. I’m not a php guru, but I did check to see if the mysql module was installed, and it is. I’m using a Mac with OS 10.6.8 and both Apache and php are bundled and I haven’t changed any settings. The MySQL I installed from a binary download.
Any ideas at all.
