500 error means that the FTP server is not able to recognize the command. DigitalOcean does not allow FTP by default. You will need to use SFTP. You can use Filezilla or any other SFTP software. If you have a SSH key added on your server, it makes things a lot simpler. Did you add a SSH key to your DigitalOcean server when you created it? You can use it to SSH or SFTP into your software. SSH can be complicated at first but once you get the hang of it, you’ll definately love it. If you do not have a SSH key, you can use SFTP using your root username and password, which was created when you created your server. The configuration for SFTP using password is:
Port: 22
Host: Droplet IP
Username: root
Password: root password
Protocol: SFTP
Hope this helps. Just reply to this comment if you need further help.
@levanii
You will need to get ftp access, or File Manager access through your control panel, or usually you could ask your host to upload the file for you.
– delete the Yoast plugin from your site
– delete any cache plugin
– create the default WordPress file called .htaccess (note the dot at the beginning of this file) – here is the content :
https://wordpress.org/support/article/htaccess/#basic-wp
– if you manage to upload the file using ftp, you will need to set the permissions :

@corrinarusso i don t have access to website, so i can’t remove or add plugins.
there is internal error when i mtrying to go to site.
@manishc No i skipped ssh key while building droplet and chose one time email password. can i add now ssh key? to droplet? if so, i will be able to connect via sftp protocol.
@levanii
If you have ssh, then cd into :
/wp-content/plugins/
then remove all the plugs :
or just :
rm /wp-content/plugins/*
If you need to add a new .htaccess file, then you can remove the old one, and vi .htaacess at the root of your website, and paste in the .htaccess file contents from above.
can i add ssh now to droplet i tried but could t find how to configure
@manishc but i need to connect via ftp. even without ssh.i just need to connect to edit htaccess. it’s possible right? but there is error when i m trying to connect
@levanii
If you use a terminal or something like MobaXterm to connect over SSH, then you can automatically use FTP or SFTP within the terminal window.
If all you want to do is edit the .htaccess file, then ssh over there, and just edit it using vi :

If you can getting an error trying to connect, then you will need to post the error here. We can’t troubleshoot without knowing what the error is.
I m trying to connect vis ftp client (winscp) to see and edit htaccess file, but when i tried to connect this error shows up:

thank you. there is internal server error. the thing is i can’t connect via ftp so i won’t be able to connect via sftp too. i skipped ssh key configuration while i was building droplet , cause it was more complicated for me. i think it won’t make sense to configure ssh key now, i opened support ticket and asked about my issue, (i hope) they are going to answer soon
@levanii
An internal server error in the browser from your website is a completely different issue than trying to connect via S/FTP. There should be no relationship between the two.
Yes. You pay for your hosting every month, which includes support – and this is definitely a support issue! π
