There isn’t one.
When they sign up, it is to the network as a whole. They get pseudo-subscriber status if they just get a username. When they get added to a SUB site, then they can have a different user level.
If they sign up and get a blog, they are an admin of that blog.
You can change this via some tiny plugin scattered here in the forums, but there’s no setting in the backend.

I’m goign to have to find a way to get new users to be contributors, just as I had when it was just a normal WP site, because the idea is that users can add links & info as posts, then they can edit them.
Any ideas on a good plugin to just do that?

The P2 theme meets that requirement; it offers an option to allow any registered user to post, which they can do from the front page.

Thanks for the link, but I’m using the Headway theme and Gravity Forms for the additions to be made, so would need it to be a plugin.
