I can't access my dashboard on one of my wordpress sites

  • Hello, I have 3 wordpress sites and on one of them I am unable to access the dashboard (http://www.careerdesigner.net). I can login to my site and access other menu items but under dashboard their are no menu items (Home, Updates) and I get an error message when I click on it that says “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.” even though I am the admin.

    I haven’t changed anything but a theme and deactivated two plugins. I have no idea what to check to fix the problem since I haven’t made any significant changes. Hopefully someone can help.

    I still see your theme and many plugins, including caching – which may be the problem:

    !– Performance optimized by W3 Total Cache. Learn more: http://www.w3-edge.com/wordpress-plugins/

    Delete the cache and then deactivate all plugins and switch themes. Are you doing so using FTP?

    I turned plugins off and switched theme using FTP. What should I do next?

    And what’s going on with the site now?

    I still get a message that I don’t have sufficient permission to access certain areas like the dashboard.

    I made that change in the database and nothing happened…still don’t have permissions.

    Have you checked the file permissions –

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions

    Have you tried reintalling WP as per esmi’s post above –

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    I will try this. How will it effect all of my articles, images, content etc.?

    I did all of the above.
    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    Afterwards I am still getting the same message that I do not have sufficient permissions to access the dashboard.

    It sounds like maybe your admin user or the user that you are using doesn’t have the correct permission access assigned in the database.

    This is a break down of tables in the database:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Database_Description#Table:_wp_usermeta

    You would have to check the wp_usermeta table in your database to see if your user still has the correct permissions.

    The part that is important is the wp_capabilities a:1:{s:13:”administrator”;b:1;}

    KRAZYKandace thanks so much for your post. I changed the wp_capabilities in the database to what you listed above because it was set to a:2:{s:13:”administrator”;s:1:”1″;s:13:”bbp_keymaster”;b:1;} I tried logging in and got the same message that I didn’t have permission to access dashboard. I went back to my database and noticed that after I logged in the wp_capabilities changed back to a:2:{s:13:”administrator”;s:1:”1″;s:13:”bbp_keymaster”;b:1;}. I thought maybe the buddypress forum plugin was interfering so I deactivated it. (I don’t have a buddypress site just using the bbPress plugin to add a forum to my site.)

    I tried logging in again and this time with the plugin deactivated the wp_capabilities stayed at a:1:{s:13:”administrator”;b:1;} but I still get that same message saying I don’t have sufficient permission to access the dashboard. Any suggestions? This is so frustrating since it makes it hard to manage my site without access to the dashboard.

    You have your website set for IE7 – this is wrong.
    <meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=7″ />

    You have validation errors, http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3a%2f%2fwww.careerdesigner.net%2f, which can cause problems.

    You have a premium theme, TheStyle, which might be supported here, https://www.elegantthemes.com/members-area/ but is definitely not supported here.
