Front end of site is working fine. But back end is partially not working. WordPress dashboard (front page of backend) showing error (internal server error). But other pages of back end working fine like plugin page, theme, pages and posts etc.

So I am getting this error only in dashboard and when I try to update or add a new page. I have tried to disable all plugins and also try to switch to Twenty Fifteen But still problem remains!!!

Any suggestion what else I can try?

A .htaccess rule could be the source of the problem. To check for this, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and rename the .htaccess file. If you can’t find a .htaccess file, make sure that you have set your SFTP or FTP client to view invisible files.

If you weren’t able to resolve the issue by either resetting your plugins and theme or renaming your .htaccess file, we may be able to help, but we’ll need a more detailed error message. Internal server errors are usually described in more detail in the server error log. If you have access to your server error log, generate the error again, note the date and time, then immediately check your server error log for any errors that occurred during that specific time period. If you don’t have access to your server error log, ask your hosting provider to look for you.

Sorry I got late in reply. In may case I don’t have .htaccess file And I also check error log but I cant see any error in it.

So right now I am thinking of downgrade my wordpress version. On the time of upgrade I just replace the wp_admin and wp_includes. And on login I have been asked to update database so I did.

So in downgrade I am thinking of again replacing wp_admin and wp_includes. Will it work? Any possible issue that I can face in databse (since I update if on first login time after updation of wordpress). I didn’t take the backup of database before updating the wordpress.

So its a good idea/way to downgrade wordpress version or any other better way available?

Unless you have a backup that you can restore from, downgrading is a dangerous process, which is why backing up before upgrading is strongly recommended both in the upgrade instructions and automatic upgrade interface.

It would be better to solve your current problem.

You should definitely have a .htaccess file, you can’t have custom permalinks without it, but you might need to configure your FTP app to show hidden/invisible files before you can see it.

Also, do contact your hosting provider about that error log. The true cause of a 500 error is *always* recorded in the server error log, that’s pretty much why error logs exist, so if your error log is empty, your server if probably misconfigured.

I have search .htaccess file via my ftp. To view hidden file I go to menu -> Server -> Force show hidden file option and click on it. And its now showing check (tick mark) symbol on it. So I can view hidden files in ftp. But even with enabling this option I can’t see .htaccess file! I search for file in the root folder of wordpress in which wp_admin and wp_content folder are present.

To make it more clear I got to wordpress settings -> permalinks option There under common settings option Post Name was selected. Then I click on save changes then look for .htaccess file again but still file not present!

It will be in the same directory as the wp-login.php file. You absolutely cannot have a post name permalink structure without it.

    Thread Starter rish30990

    (@rish30990)

I can’t see .htaccess file even with enabling option of show hidden file in filezilla! So I searched it on google but found only solution which I have tried like enabling option in filezilla which I have shown in my previous comment. I also found one post in which another user is struggling to find that file: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/no-htaccess-file-in-core-download?replies=10

So I can’t see any way to find .htaccess file. wp-login.php is present in wordpress root directory but .htaccess not present there. Then should I manually create one! so that I can setup according to the wordpress’s current version. If yes then how?

And one more thing, website is using windows hosting, May be thats why I can’t see any .htaccess file. Is wondows hosting can be the cause of not appearing .htaccess file?

Yes, Windows hosting servers do not use .htaccess files. The windows equivalent is a file named web.config.

Ah, yes, I should have asked if it was a Windows host, sorry about that!

In this particular case, I recommend generating the error again (simply seeing the Internal Server Error in your browser), note the date and time, then asking your hosting provider to check your server error log for any errors that occurred during that specific time period.

If the error log is still empty for them, there’s a rather critical server misconfiguration.

Ok I generated error at 10:04 or 10:05. Then I look for error in error log but couldn’t see any error in there. Here is the error log of around that time..

Can you find any error in there?

That’s the access log. The error log will be a separate file.

Ok I have solved my issue few days ago. However I couldn’t find error log file and didn’t make contact with godaddy because their customer support is not good.

    How I solved my issue?

That solution might work for everyone (if your theme/plugin/.htacess is not the cause of problem)

I simply install latest wordpress version in new domain and export database from old domain’s database and import in new domain by changing url in database (wordpress database uses site url in database query so that url need to be changed if you are going to import it in new url/domain). AND then I copy the wp_content folder to my new setup by replacing previous wp_content (so that I can get my images theme and plugins in my new wordpress setup). And surprisingly my new domain started working like it was woking in old domain before wordpress update.

At last when Site started running in new domain then I change the new domain name as it was on previous domain. Than mean I replace the new domain with old one so that I can get my previous domain working because it was live site.

BUT only question that pissing me off that, why I need to do all these!!??? There was no problem in my site, if there were any then it won’t started working in my new domain. That mean wordpress update process may cause some unwanted problems.

That mean if you install a wordpress and add your theme plugins in there then it will be fine AND If you update the wordpress version then your will get problems!! So it should be wrong if I say its all of the wordpress fault!? Because by updating wordpress can’t keep up with the site!

Thanks for sharing your solution. If there is ever indeed really a normal experience with WordPress, your experience would have been the furthest from it. We have thousands of people updating daily. 5 hours after WordPress 4.5 was released, half a million people had upgraded and not encountered your problem. So, I don’t want this to scare you off from updating.

Based on what you described, it seems like there was something wrong with the PHP configuration on the previous domain under your hosting account. That’s something their support should have caught and been able to help with, I’m sorry that they didn’t.

    Thread Starter rish30990

    (@rish30990)

Yes, got your point. I know godaddy’s hosting is not good and specially their customer support! So no wonder if someone took long to solve the issue if his/her hosting is from godaddy.

However, I am marking this solution as resolved.
