• Hello ,

I accidentally changed the URL of my wordpress site and can no longer access it. Even the admin mode is blocked so I can’t change the url again to reset the old one.

I’m a newbie on the subject so i’ll give you every information i have.

The site is hosted on OVH and I don’t have a backup available (I’m not the creator of the site, it was given to me, don’t have all the information, sorry).
So the site redirects to the new address I defined. How can I go back?

I have an idea but i don’t know if it will work.

-Buy the new domain on OVH :
If i do that, would I be able to access the admin console ? If i try to go to the plug-ins, the URL seems to lend access because it is “new-domain” redirect to “old-domain” : https://fujitsu-france-blog.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Finfiniment-it-fujitsu.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fplugins.php&reauth=1

I can’t find any way to contact a person at wordpress. Is there anybody at wordpress that can just change the URL back again ?
It was so simple to screw the website, is it not as simple to “repare it” ?

Thank you very much for your help,
    Antonin

  • What you have done is pretty easy to do and happens all the time. It’s a little more involved and you might need to call your web host for a bit of help since you changed your domain name that had access to the WordPress side of your website to a non-existant or broken domain name.

The document below should be able to help you…

    https://wordpress.org/support/article/changing-the-site-url/

I particularly like this part of the document referenced there. The ‘trick’ below (mentioned in the above article) is a great way to get WordPress itself to recognize the proper domain name again…

    https://wordpress.org/support/article/changing-the-site-url/#edit-wp-config-php

This stuff is pretty is easy for anyone who has done it a few times but can get confusing… even hosting support people get it wrong or struggle with it. If you need more help or clarification we are here. Just ask!

Hello thank you for your fast response !

By web host, what do you mean ? I talked to a colleague that told me i have a data host (OVH) and a web host and that’s two different things (it seems). She’s not the one in charge of our host, so she might not have the full knowledge of it.
She told me that the web host must be wordpress since it is a worpress website. But i cannot contact anyone besides the forums.

So, i tried to access the FTP with different methods but i cannot access it. To be honest, it’s the first time I heard of FTP so I’m continuing my research en tries.
I have a FileZilla, maybe that’s were the files are if I understand correctly ?

As for Php My admin, if i’m correct, it is the developer part where i can code, it would be very usefull.
Can i set it up now or was it needed before the “crash”. I going to try to reach the one in charge of this to gain access but i think it would not be possible.

It seems that i’m blocked because i don’t have the full picture of the website or i don’t understand some things.
Could you enlighten me on those points please ?

Thank you very much for your time,
Tel me if you need more info on anything

Go to the hosting environment. How I cannot tell you, you have to figure it out yourself. Usually it’s a place where you can manage databases, ftp, email addresses etc.

You need to access the database, in most hosting environments this is done with phpMyAdmin.

When you’re in phpMYadmin find table “wp_options” (note: the prefix ‘wp_’ maybe different).

The first option_id’s (1 & 2) are ‘siteurl’ & ‘home’, make sure those values are correct.
NOTE: the urls must be like: ” http://your-domain.com “.

“I can’t find any way to contact a person at wordpress. Is there anybody at wordpress that can just change the URL back again ?”
No, you have a stand-alone WP version that is installed on your own hosting.

It was so simple to screw the website, is it not as simple to “repare it” ?
You changed something without understanding what it does, this is not a recommended tactic ;-). Next time, before pressing the save button first make sure you fully understand what you’re doing. A quick search online, and you would have found many articles explaining the consequences of changing this setting.

    Good luck

    Thank you bjornwebdesign !

I will check the hosting environement, i Know how to find it.
    I don’t understant one last thing :

When you’re in phpMYadmin find table “wp_options” (note: the prefix ‘wp_’ maybe different).

The first option_id’s (1 & 2) are ‘siteurl’ & ‘home’, make sure those values are correct.
NOTE: the urls must be like: ” http://your-domain.com

When you say this, i guess it concern the developer part on the “changing URL” topics. Do I need to put the new URL or the past URL. You did not mention it and i’m little confused.

    Sorry to bother.

Thank you very much for your help !
