So I installed Hummingbird and when I run a speed test there are Hummingbird assets slowing my site by almost a whole second. My overall speed score has gone down sine using this plugin along with Smush.

    Hi @healthysolutions4living,

Sorry to hear about that. Is it possible to share an URL of the website, so that we could check further regarding this?

It’s tough to say what exactly might be causing it without checking the website and the page speed score on what factors might be affecting it.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Kind Regards,
    Nithin

    Hi @healthysolutions4living

    Thank you for the URL.

I checked the score using Google pagespeed and I see the desktop score is already good 92 / 100 and some improvement can be done in the mobile score.

When enabling the Assets Optimization and Hummingbird caching it will take a couple of minutes for the plugin to run all the optimizations and it is necessary to run more than one time the test, you will find the complete explanation on our video guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2WSkG6-x74&list=PLV1BcivFAIdu9nxH0DU-W7LO3pFKrmbhl

Disabling the Caching > preload caching can help in the process of avoiding the site get stuck on any performance task.

Some steps are also necessary to ensure the plugin is well configured.

I will list some based on your mobile score:

    Eliminate render-blocking resources

By default the Hummingbird won’t move the files to the footer using the Assets optimization in the automatic mode, it compresses and combines all files reducing the number of requests, to move some CSS or JS to the footer you can use the automatic mode following this guide:

    https://wpmudev.com/docs/wpmu-dev-plugins/hummingbird/#eliminate-render-blocking-resources

Note, moving some scripts like jQuery core is not suggested.

    Reduce unused CSS

The same shared guide shows how to remove the unused CSS, but I would suggest moving those to the footer and sometimes Google won’t be able to see all the site content.

For further optimization you can follow our Hummingbird and Smush guidelines:

    https://wpmudev.com/docs/wpmu-dev-plugins/hummingbird/#optimization-guide
    https://wpmudev.com/docs/wpmu-dev-plugins/smush/#optimization-guide

Let us know if you have any additional questions.
    Best Regards

Thank you. Prior to running Hummingbird my desktop score was 97/100.

Perhaps you can tell me why Smush says “x images processed” and gives a number more than 1 when I have only the one image uploaded?

    Hi @healthysolutions4living,

Prior to running Hummingbird my desktop score was 97/100

At the moment, the website isn’t fully optimized, as I could still see Asset Optimization isn’t fully working on the website. So the current score shouldn’t be treated as the final result.

Would highly recommend following the steps by Patrick and see how it goes.

Perhaps you can tell me why Smush says “x images processed” and gives a number more than 1 when I have only the one image uploaded?

When you upload an image, WordPress will create multiple thumbnails of that single image. So suppose if you upload an image abc.jpg as an example, WordPress will create multiple thumbnails as abc-100×100.jpg, abc-300×300.jpg, abc-500×500.jpg etc

So hence you are noticing such messages even when you only have 1 image uploaded.

You can check the following guide for more info about thumbnails:

Still having issues. Very frustrating trying to work with this plugin as I am always getting messages that “our servers are having problems and will be down for xxx minutes”.

If I want to uninstall Hummingbird will it put things back the way they were or am I going to be stuck with a lot of “junk” left behind. Quite frankly my speed scores were better prior to installing.

    Hi @healthysolutions4living

    Sorry to hear it,

For “our servers are having problems and will be down for xxx minutes” Do you mean the plugin is sending this notification?

If so, it is the Uptime feature only available for Hummingbird Pro, in case you are using the Pro version kindly create a ticket on our Pro member area and we can take a closer look https://wpmudev.com/get-support/

About the score, it really depends on how the plugin was configured, following the guide that we sent before you would be able to increase the site score.

    Best Regards
