Huge Spike In Spam Comment Attempts

  • Hi all,

Over the last week, I’ve had this huge spike in attempts to post spam comments to my blog.

I only post entries 2 or 3 times a week at most and only ever get a couple of genuine comments a month – and this spike in spam has now reached about 100 per day, making it very difficult to moderate.

Might I have done something stupid to cause this – and is there anything I can do to mitigate it further?

    Here’s my blog:

  • Don’t you use the Akismet plugin? I get between 200-300 spam comments a day, but most are deleted automatically. Only a handfull get through to the moderation queue, and I’ve only had one reported case of a genuine comment being deleted.

You might also want to update at least to WordPress 2.0.10, if not 2.1.3. You are using an old version which may have security holes that make it easier to post spam. Either will come with the latest version of Akismet.

Unfortunately, spam is a fact of life as your blog becomes more established and linked from sites and search engines.
