Large postmeta file slows admin page, causes database deadlock, memory limit

Is there an alternative structure to postmeta that others have used to index a large postmeta file for faster use by WooCommerce?
Our admin pages and backend searches of orders are often slow due to a large wp_postmeta file. This is despite a large commercial-grade Virtual Private Server.
Maybe it would help if postmeta data were instead structured as 1 order per row?
It looks like a project was started to do this but the last commit on github was over 1 year ago

You can power order search in wp-admin using Algolia which means you have a very fast order search.
