Support » Fixing WordPress » HTTPS issue – widgets/advert not appearing outside homescreen

    Hi there, thanks for reading.

I have a couple of queries that might be related.

I’ve recently moved hosting. I’m getting HTTPS issues. When readers reach the blog, they get warned by chrome because it appears to be the server name and not the website name.

When the site appears the theme isn’t loaded properly. It looks like a badly mangled mobile site with linear presentation of the stories.

Furthermore, when clicking a story, adverts/facebook widget disappears. The adsense ads I’ve managed to restore by pasting the links again though I’m not sure if they’re appearing for everyone.

Details: DNS moved about 48 hours ago

I contacted by host and they’re saying an $80 SSL certificate will fix this. But I just want a second opinion in case it’s avoidable as I’ve just paid a bit to move my site.

  • Do you need an SSL? Are there specific pages going over https or is it the entire site? What are your site url and home url set as in your General Settings?

    Hi Craig.

Admin login seems to want to keep going into https for some reason and then crosses it out it chrome.

A reader from my site seems to have diagnosed the cause though I’m still not sure how to get around it:

    >>>>You probably are already aware of this and have heard of it more than you’d care for, or then the problem presents itself just for me, but the ssl certificate this site uses seems to be only valid for *.gridserver.com and gridserver.com . This causes the mainpage to load without styles since the css file points to https:// instead of http:// and when I try to go to any of the articles I get a warning about the site. I can get to the articles by removing ‘s’ from https:// but still the articles are loaded without styles due to the same problem.

The site worked for a while after you first posted this post and everything looked good and even the articles loaded normally, but it broke some time after that and has now been like this for a day or so. I don’t know if you can manually set whether links point to https or to http, or if there is some “Force SSL” tha could be unchecked, but it might be the easiest fix since there should be no need for a https connection on page like this that takes no personal information.>>>

Your reader is correct, that appears to be the issue you are facing. It looks like you are attempting to force SSL without a certificate (the $80 cert your host was talking about) but unless you take personal information like credit cards or something, you should not need an SSL.

What plugins do you have installed? Does deactivating your plugins resolve the issue? What about switching to an unmodified default theme? It is possible there is something attempting to force SSL on your site.

Thanks! Yeah I thought that do, we don’t take any information in. Comments is done via disqus.

Plugins installed (by myself and previous host to fix a different issue)

    1) Askimet
    2) Backup WordPress
    3) Batch comment spam deletion
    4) disqus
    5) hashcash
    6) hello dolly
    7) quick adsense
    8) wp migrate db
    9) wp supercache
    10) wp to twitter

    The only ones active are:

    1) Askimet
    4) Disqus
    7) quick adsense
    9) wp supercache
    10) wp to twitter.

W3 total cache folder was deleted over FTP in favour of supercache.

In your .htaccess, is there anything rewriting to https? (Could just open it in Notepad and search for https)

Have you tried deactivating all of your plugins and switching to an unmodified default theme? This can rule out anything your theme or plugins may be doing to cause the issue.

    Thank you Craig,

I was just about to try those things. Another guide I read said the same thing. I searched wp config and .htaccess for anything mentioning https. Nada.

I spoke to chat support and they investigated the matter. The most likely cause they reckon was that “FastCGI being enabled in PHP settings”.

I have been unable to replicate the SSL error anymore.

    Thank you though.

Great to hear your issue is resolved. I rarely have conflicts when switching from Apache to FastCGI or vice versa so not sure what’s going on there but hey, it works!
