http to https – can’t access site
-
Hi
I followed instructions from ryte.com and changed my site’s url from http to https.
Immediately, I lost access to both my site and wp-admin.
Tried to resolve the issue following instructions on https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL
but with no success.
Can you please help as my site is not completely locked out.
Thank you

Hello, you can contact your host
Hi, I’m trying fixing this in cpanel- is this what I should be doing?
or do you mean to contact support at cpanel?
assuming you added SSL and HTTPS as per below link:
have you access to FTP?
if so, see below link:
http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-add-ssl-and-https-in-wordpress/you probably just need to make a couple of changes to .htaccess file
and possibly wp-config.php but it’s in the above guidanceit recognizes https://www.millabout.com.au/ but goes to an error page https://www.millabout.com.au/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi
no, that’s the problem … I didn’t add a ssl certificate, I don’t have one
just changed http to https in the settings in millabout.com.au/wp-admin and was thrown out immediately
I’ve been through the steps on http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-add-ssl-and-https-in-wordpress/ but couldnt’ fix it
I have troubles locating the .htaccess file, the search finds it as public_html/.htaccess but then opened every single folder under public-html and can’t locate it
This trouble is probably because I changed http to https without having ssl certificate – it was possible without any warning or info in WP settings, wish there was a warning for people like myself who aren’t web developers …
can this be reversed?
thanks
Nellyassume you are using FTP
.htaccess is usually amongst the first group of files you get to wherever your wordpress directory is
example: /www.millabout.com.au/web/wordpress
this may help:

https://support.hostgator.com/articles/how-to-edit-your-htaccess-fileHi
I now added Let’s Encrypt SSL Certificate, via my host Ventraip, and activated it in cPanel.
Sadly, I still can’t see my site or access it via wp-admin
https://millabout.com.au (blank page)
https://millabout.com.au/wp_admin – error message: This millabout.com.au page canβt be found
No webpage was found for the web address: https://millabout.com.au/wp_admin
HTTP ERROR 404I hope you can assist urgently, please?
Thanks

can’t login, that’s the problem
just now, got the login screen – but then got the site insecure error again
do you know what causes all these issues, can you see from your side?
the only thing I can think of is the .htaccess file needs amending
did you change the path in that file?
hi, yes I think I tried – but not 100% sure π I’ve been through so many steps and instructions over the last 2 days …
I was just told by cPanel that it might be a server issue, so trying to work on that with them and the host, Ventraip
hopefully it will be resolved, but if not I’ll try again that – changing the path in .htaccess
can you please point me to instructions?
thanks
Nellymy web host, Ventraip, say that it’s not a server issue, can you please help with any of this:
“did some more searching and removed the Let’s encrypt cert and the admin page is showing the below.
Fatal error: Call to a member function get() on boolean in /home/millabou/public_html/wp-content/themes/hestia/ti-notifications/ti-about-page/class-themeisle-about-page.php on line 274
Or
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘**’ (T_POW) in /home/millabou/public_html/wp-content/themes/fagri/functions.php on line 5
There definitely seem to be some website issues stopping this one from loading. Mainly surrounding the theme”
I can see your site now so it may be you’ve fixed it or very close.
did you see this?
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/fatal-error-2670/One workaround is to:
disable the theme that’s causing the problem (you can change the folder name and that should do it, usually FTP), it’ll then automatically use the WordPress default theme
then, if it lets you log in, you update WordPress so it’s up to date and revert to your original themethanks @judgerookie, yes I’m back up, thank you for your assistance in this.
one thing, the site still shows the insecure icon – even though the SSL Certificate is installed, and I’m unable to change http to https in the settings as this option is greyed out.
do you know why?
have a look at this and see if it helps: https://wpengine.com/support/trouble-editing-home-and-site-url/
thank you! all seems to be ok now
