# http or www?

* I have noticed that some blogs resolve to [http://blogname.whatever](http://blogname.whatever)
and other resolve to [http://www.blogname.whatever](http://www.blogname.whatever)
dependent upon the address placed in the URI wordpress address/blog address field
in the options panel. My personal preference is for the latter. However in my
default installation both are set to the former. Is it ok to change these to
the latter or will doing so affect anything such as RSS syndications for example?
BTW pardon my ignorance but why URI instead of URL?

* All URLs are URIs… but not all URIs are URLs.

There is one good reason why you’d want to use [http://site.com](http://site.com)
as opposed to [http://www.site.com:](http://www.site.com:) There can be issues
with the way cookies are set. If your cookie is set as [http://www.site.com](http://www.site.com),
the user cannot access it if they go to site.com And of course, the www is trite
and redundant. What if you have to send mail to [user@pop3.site.com?](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/http-or-www/user@pop3.site.com?)

* Thanks for your response. I get the point about URIs vs. URLs but fail to understand
the point you are trying to make about www. Why is it “trite and redundant”?

What are the issues with cookies? Are you saying that what one places in the
URI wordpress address/blog address field determines the address to which the
cookie is set? Are you saying that if it’s set to [http://site.com](http://site.com)
a user can go to both [http://site.com](http://site.com) & [http://www.site.com](http://www.site.com)?
And why on earth would a user want to go to (or would I want a user to go to)
[http://site.com](http://site.com) (I’m presuming you mean [http://site.com](http://site.com)
where you say site.com ?) instead of [http://www.site.com….prticularly](http://www.site.com....prticularly)
when the site address I am giving out and that people are linking to is [http://www.site.com](http://www.site.com)?
Also why would anyone be sending email to [user@pop3.site.com](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/http-or-www/user@pop3.site.com?output_format=md)
when any email to my site would be in the form [user@site.com?](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/http-or-www/user@site.com?)
Thanks.
