 * Hello,
 * I’ll try to explain this to the best of my ability and based on what I was told.
Currently our site is experiencing a HTTP error 500. We cannot access the WP-
admin due to this error. I am told that earlier someone was trying to resolve
deprecated errors from showing up on the front page of our website and were messing
with the WP-config file to disable debugging. They typed a line of code wrong
or added a line of code in the wrong place and now the entire site is experiencing
this error. We need some way to access the file so that we can revert the change
that was made. I gather from what I’ve read that this could be done through FTP/
filezilla. However, I am not sure we have credentials created for an FTP profile
and our website is no longer hosted by dreamhost. it is just on wordpress. We
are not sure how to troubleshoot this and would appreciate any input.

 * Internal server errors (error 500) are often caused by plugin or theme function
conflicts, so if you have access to your Dashboard, try deactivating all plugins.
If you don’t have access to your Dashboard, try [manually resetting your plugins](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/faq-troubleshooting/#how-to-deactivate-all-plugins-when-not-able-to-access-the-administrative-menus)(
no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the problem, reactivate each
one individually until you find the cause.
 * If that does not resolve the problem, try switching to the Twenty Twenty-Three
theme to rule out a theme-specific problem. If you don’t have access to your
Dashboard, access your server via [SFTP or FTP](https://developer.wordpress.org/advanced-administration/upgrade/ftp/),
or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting
provider’s documentation for specifics on these), navigate to /wp-content/themes/
and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the
default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific problem.
 * If that does not resolve the problem, it’s possible that a .htaccess rule could
be the source of the problem. To check for this, access your server via SFTP
or FTP or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and rename
the .htaccess file. If you can’t find a .htaccess file, ensure that you have
set your SFTP or FTP client to view invisible files.
 * If you couldn’t resolve the problem by resetting your plugins and theme or renaming
your .htaccess file, we might be able to help, but we’ll need a more detailed
error message. Internal server errors are usually described in more detail in
the server error log. If you have access to your server error log, generate the
error again, note the date and time, then immediately check your server error
log for any errors that occurred during that specific time. If you don’t have
access to your server error log, ask your hosting provider to look for you.
 * We only need the error log entries within a minute or two of generating the error.
Sending the entire error log would be unhelpful.
