• My blog located at http://newhorizonsfor.us/ has disappeared. I get the message “The website cannot display the page”, and under “more information” I get “This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the webpage from displaying.”
I have a second blog at http://beyondlinesandcircles.com/ and that one works fine. Both are hosted by the same BlueHost account. The working one is the add-on.

I got alerted to the problem by others who lost access to the page. I cannot log in now as the page does not come up at all.

Apart from updating the functioning blog, my only recent activity was related to wordpress.com, not wordpress.org. To gain access to another friend’s blog, I had to change my password for wordpress.com. I did not think the sites were connected, however my wordpress.org blogs are now listed in the wordpress.com account and the non-functional one is listed without access.

  • 500 errors are all server-based, and the main rason they happen on WordPress sites is when there’s something wrong with the .htaccess file. The way to test this is to delete the .htacces file from that site using FTP (but make a backup first, just in case). If that lets you back in then you can go and reset your permalink settings to re-create the .htaccess file and it should be OK.

If that doesn’t work have a look at your servers error log as that will show you what the actual error is. Your web host may have to help you with that, so please feel free to ask them for some assistance as well.
