Support » Fixing WordPress » Http 500 error in backend

  • I can reach the wordpress login page. I enter the login credintials then once I hit submit I receive a http 500 internal server error. Then if was to enter my website address on my web browser, I land on the site just fine and I realize the admin tab above the site page is there but once again when I click on my dashboard, I receive the http 500 internal server error. I did not add any new plugins, or any updates…I updated my site but only adding our holiday store hours and now today I can’t get access my site’s backend. What gives? Any help would be appreciated.

Your first step should be locating error log for your hosting account or asking support to help with that.

    – it could be problem with the plugins. try resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.
    – it could be a problem with the theme. Momentarily, try switching to the default theme via FTP by renaming your current theme to rule out any theme specific issue.
    – if these steps don’t help, download WordPress again and replace your copies of everything EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies. This should replace your core files without changing your content and settings in wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory.
