Site url? Have you checked for a missing </em>
in your post markup?
“I can’t find any other stray code weirdness on the site.”
Yes, that includes a stray </em>
It only occurs on Single Post pages, of course – when comments are visible.
Here’s an example of such a page:
http://www.fluentself.com/blog/update/friday-chicken-67-the-progably-edition/
You won’t see an example of the phenomenon of course, since we’re take italics out of the comments so as not to screw up the site.
What plugins are you running?
Plugins – though I did test with *all* of them deactivated, and the italic thing still happened) :

If someone adds italics to a comment, the rest of the page becomes italic.
People are doing this kind of mark-up:
<em>italic</em>
When I view source, it’s showing this instead – changing the first
<em>
to</em>
, and removing the close-italics mark-up:</em>italic
But when I try to edit the comment, the mark-up shows up correctly, as originally typed.
I can’t find any other stray code weirdness on the site.
What could be going on here?
