Support » Installing WordPress » htaccess problems?

  • Hi there, totally new to WordPress, but I just installed a blog on my website using Fantastico. When I try to view my blog, I get a “navigation canceled” or “IE cannot display web page” error. I am also unable to log into my WP Admin page using the correct username and password.

After a little troubleshooting I found that the .htaccess file in my root directory is the problem. If I change the file name to .htaccess2 (just something other than .htaccess) I am able to view my blog and log in to Admin panel. Then when I change the file name back to .htaccess, I am again unable to view anything.

Any ideas why this would happen? Thanks!

What’s the content of your .htaccess file?

Ipstenu, thanks for the reply..I figured it out myself not long after posting this, but wanted to post the fix in case it helps someone else down the road.

I never figured out what it was about the .htaccess file in my root directory that was screwing up my WP install. But I did find a post somewhere where someone recommended the following .htaccess file for WP. So I installed this .htaccess file in my blog directory and everything has worked since then:

    # BEGIN WordPress
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
    # END WordPress
