    Hi

I’m installing the latest version of Wordfence and I’m receiving the following error:

“We were unable to make changes to the .htaccess file. It’s possible WordPress cannot write to the .htaccess file because of file permissions, which may have been set by another security plugin, or you may have set them manually. Please verify the permissions allow the web server to write to the file, and retry the installation.”

I have Sucuri installed and I’m guessing that its done something with that file, but even if I deactivate the plugin and try again I’m not getting any luck.

On your help page is says “Check to make sure that the .htaccess file can be written by the web server user, and then try the process again”

Could you give me some pointers of where I can look to change these? Thanks!

    Hello wendystep,
you should locate the .htaccess and examine it. It will be in the root of your WordPress installation. By looking at the contents of it you might be able to tell if it looks “normal”. It is supposed to look something like this.

If the file is there and it looks normal, you need to check the permissions on it. Some FTP-programs let you do this but you can also do it command line by logging in via SSH. The permissions on it should normally be 644.

Thanks Wfasa – it was the file permissions – all sorted now!
