• setup:
    – ubuntu
    – WP 3.0.1 with multisite with sub-directorys
    http://blogs.spc.ox.ac.uk/wordpress/

I have just enabled the network in the WP back end, but i’m not too familiar with mod_rewrite and what I need to do in order to enable it (is is enabled by default – brand new fresh install of ubuntu). I’ve read a few pages and i understand the principal of it. But setting up i’m still a little puzzled.

I’m at the stage which makes sure mod_rewrite module is installed before I can install the the network of wordpress sites.

What will i need to enable for to continue, and what do i need to do regarding .htaccess (and i need to create that file?) – if someone could enlight me especially on this point that would be brilliant

Another question, what would be the best way to have my mainsite to http://blogs.spc.ox.ac.uk not with the /wordpress directory?

    Many thanks for your time,

  • You can continue with the install and then tweak mod_rewrite if you need to.
The .htaccess is a hidden text file. Go look and see if it’s in the root folder (right where wp-config is).

move the files & folders one level up on the server.

Ok slightly bigger problem – i dont have .htaccess

I know its a hidden file, but it doesn’t exist. How could i recreate these files? Re-install apache2?

make a text file and call it .htaccess. don’t reinstall anything.

Thanks for your help so far Andrea_r, it is really appreciated.

I have followed your advice so far. However I am still stuck creating new sites. E.g I have sent myself an invitation to a blog https://blogs.spc.ox.ac.uk/matt but nothing shows up and no email is received. (not going to junk or anything else)

    Any ideas?

    atb,
    matt

Check & see if the email actually got sent. (this will be in server logs)
