We recently had an issue with (what we learned) was W3 Total Cache which created MILLIONS of files on the server – that said, we were told by our host we had malware and they managed to talk us into buying THEIR firewall crap – BUT long story short, we didnt have malware (and I was VERY confident Wordfence was doing the job it has always done for me on many sites) — (so sorry but…) with THAT said, they installed “SUCURI” and then we had them remove it – and credited us the cost – but NOW I see wordfence live traffic isn’t displaying, rules haven’t been updated and moreover, HTACCESS has this in it?

Apparently it’s preventing us from reaching Wordfence servers and I dont know what HTACCESS SHOULD say, so it will work again?

Or should I uninstall it and reinstall it?

Please help and thank you in advance.

PS: THIS is what is in it currently
    ErrorDocument 404 http://tabledesigns.com
    DirectoryIndex index.php Wordfence WAF

    php_value auto_prepend_file ‘/home/qhcxp598jsqd/public_html/wordfence-waf.php’

    Hi @tabledesigns,

Thanks for running through those steps! If cron jobs are working now, then this will ensure things on Wordfence can stay updated (such as the firewall rules and Live Traffic).

Since Live Traffic still doesn’t display any results, there may be a conflict affecting the Live Traffic page. Can you try loading the page while keeping a Browser Console open to see if you can detect any JavaScript errors or files that fail to load? If you see any red text in the console, please take a screenshot of it and send it to me and I will help you interpret the errors.

If you don’t want to post the screenshot here, please feel free to email it to wftest @ wordfence . com. Include your forum username in the subject and let me know here once you’ve sent it!

    Thanks,
    Margaret

    Hi Margaret,

So I did as you instructed and I am not seeing any errors … moreover, we set up a new staging area that has its own hosting space, as opposed to being on the same server and migrated the current site over to the new staging site..

Checking today, I have live traffic on the new staging site… (this of course totally perplexes me because it’s the same site – the only difference is everything is updated … new WordPress and all new plugin updates (but i have to comb through it all before I can replicate on our LIVE site because there are issues with formatting etc)

That said, I REALLY can’t understand why live traffic wouldn’t show up on LIVE and concerned because the LIVE needs protection from Wordfence – and I can’t know if it’s running right?

    Hi @tabledesigns,

On the live site, you have a drop-in plugin object-cache.php.  Can you clear that cache?  If not, can you temporarily rename the plugin file to disable it?  Once that’s been cleared or disabled, please check the Live Traffic page again and let me know if the issue continues.

    Thanks,
    Margaret

    Hi Margaret,

So the object.cache IS gone. If you recall, I mentioned the W3 Total Cache plugin having failed and we discovered that it had stored MILLIONS of files on the host server – so that has since been deleted.

Not sure why you are seeing anything that points to it.

    Hi @tabledesigns,

I believe it may be a leftover file and I’d like to make sure it isn’t interfering as you reported the issue started after your trouble with W3 Total Cache. In both diagnostics you sent, W3 Total Cache was already uninstalled, but object-cache.php was still active. This may be part of why you’re still seeing errors mentioning W3 Total Cache as well.

It looks like the errors with the excess files may have been related to an issue with object-cache.php. W3 Total Cache reported this recently here: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/excessive-files-creation-issue/

This is an older topic, but it outlines what files you can check on and remove to ensure W3 Total Cache is fully removed, and the error message is similar to the ones you saw: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/i-removed-w3-total-cache-plug-in-but-it-still-produces-an-error-message/

If you have any questions about those, I recommend checking with their support here: https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/w3-total-cache/

If you’d like me to check if object-cache.php is still active, please send me an updated diagnostics to wftest @ wordfence . com. Let me know here once that’s sent and I’ll be happy to take a look!

    Thanks,
    Margaret

You’re right I am still seeing a line of error on the top of the page on the WordPress dashboard
“files appear to be missing or out of place. Please re-install plugin or remove /home/qhcxp598jsqd/public_html/wp-content/object-cache.php.”

However it WAS removed by the host and I can confirm through file directories *FTP* however I am NOT sure what remnants could be hanging around since that plugin failed SO badly AND …

the thread you referenced was actually started by me – if you look further down the page you will see “TABLE DESIGNS”?? That’s me *us*….

They haven’t fixed it yet – no update yet. AND I uninstalled it and then we had to remove that cache.
At first “I” was doing so through FTP when we discovered file usage was maxed out – THEN finally asked the host (Godaddy) and THEY deleted it. Just last week …

Ive also started an entirely new staging site *which is where I am working currently* and the LIVE is backdated – since WordPress had crashed – formatting all thrown out of whack – the caching plugin messed up – and Wordfence too. I’ve been at my wits end with all of these fires to put out :/

SENT YA THAT DIAGNOSTICS REPORT too!

    Hi @tabledesigns,

Oh wow, I didn’t even realize you’d already responded on that topic! It’s good to see you were already on top of it. Hopefully, we can sort this last bit out for you and have everything working normally again.

Thanks for sending the diagnostics over! I’ve got some good news. Regarding the cron jobs, there are still some overdue ones, but they are running now. In your original diagnostics, cron jobs hadn’t run since July, but now your oldest one is from November. I also see the Wordfence cron jobs due soon on the list, so hopefully you’ll see rules updating normally from now on.

The file object-cache.php is still active. You can check this in your Wordfence Diagnostics under Must-Use WordPress Plugins. I imagine it’s leftover from when you removed W3 Total Cache. From your error message, you should be able to locate it in the wp-content directory, at /home/qhcxp598jsqd/public_html/wp-content/object-cache.php. Since your site can load the file, it should be visible over FTP, but if you don’t see it, please check with your host.

Once that’s removed, please let me know how everything’s working! You can also send me a new diagnostics if you’d like and I can make sure it’s inactive.

    Thanks,
    Margaret

Hi Margaret… About that topic, I actually started it! ha

Anyway, I am happy to let you know I was able to find that file per your help AND Wordfence traffic IS displaying now and all seems to be working well.

Only issue having trouble with discerning is the “Web Application Firewall – Stops Complex Attacks” in Firewall Options is just 35%? and the values it in … but overall … everything else seems to be back to normal – thanks to YOU!

Thank you for all of your help.

    Hey Laurie,

I’m so glad to hear that! For the firewall percentage, have you optimized the firewall? The firewall optimization allows Wordfence to run and protect your site before any other PHP scripts. Our documentation on that can be found here: https://www.wordfence.com/help/firewall/optimizing-the-firewall/

If it is already optimized, you can hover your mouse over the firewall percentage to see some recommendations for how you can increase the % shown.

    Thanks,
    Margaret
