I’m having a continuing problem with my .htaccess file getting erased. It happens every few days. When it does, my website is inaccessible except for the home page. I know how to restore it, but I want to know how to stop the problem from happening in the first place.

I’ve browsed the forum and can’t find an answer that I understand. My site and all its plug-ins are kept updated. I would appreciate help with this issue!

WordPress core does not erase your .htaccess file by itself or automatically.

Therefore, it seems to be server issue.

Have discussed this issue with your hosting provider?

Meanwhile try (in case any of your plugins functions or your theme functions are causing this issue):
    – deactivating ALL plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
    – If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the unedited default Twenty Fifteen theme for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

Thank you! I’ve deactivated all my plug-ins, as you suggested. I will wait to see if this problem happens again.

When I discussed this issue with my hosting provider, they said they thought it was a WordPress issue.

    Thanks!

I deactivated all my plug-ins except for Akismet, because when I turned it off I immediately started getting overwhelmed with SPAM. And then after a day my website crashed again (the htaccess file disappeared). Is it possible that the Akismet plug-in is corrupted? And if so, what is a good alternative?

    Not likely.

WordPress only touches the .htaccess file when an admin tells it to such as for updating permalinks from fancy to default or vice versa.

It could be a hack (would be my guess), or an errant cron job, or other software gone awry.

Have you discussed this issue with your hosting provider? This could also be server issue.
