• I would appreciate opinion/advice please

I know wordpress has built in support for www or non-www URLs (Settings>General) however an online URL canonicalization test allegedly shows that my http://www.sitename.com and http://sitename.com do not resolve to the same URL.

So I added the RewriteCond and RewriteRule to my .htacess file to redirect non-www to www.

And then used Google Webmaster Tools to add both www and non-www sites (same domain) and set the preferred domain to, in my specific case, http://www.sitename.com.

So…opinions/advice please. Was the RewriteCond and RewriteRule in the .htaccess file overkill or unnecessary? More harm than good for SEO? It would seem that if WP has built in canonicalization for this that the online SEO site checkup would not flag it or maybe it can’t see it properly.
