 * I’m running WP on a Fasthosts shared server under IIS
 * How does the mod-rewrite work as I understood that htaccess only works on linux.
 * Thanks in advance.

 * That is correct (for the most part). The .htaccess file is a file extension used
   with web servers that are not IIS (Apache) .htaccess does not work with IIS.
 * You should contact your hosts support group for instructions on how you might
   be able to change your permalink structure for use on their Windows server.

 * Hi ClaytonJames
 * Just to make it clear. WP permalinks seem to work fine on my Fasthosts IIS platform
   although FH support tells me that htaccess is not supported…only on linux…but
   it still works even if I delete the htaccess file.
 * This works ok:

 * Is index.php ‘trapping’ the rest of the incoming URL somehow?
 * Confused of Bristol here!!
 * Regards

 * That’s correct. You can place .htaccess files on your site all day long, and
   IIS (your Windows web server) will just ignore them. IIS web server does not
   recognize the .htaccess file extension.
 * If permalinks are working, then it’s because your host has configured their Windows
   server to allow you to use alternate permalink structures. It has nothing to
   do with an .htaccess file.
 * I’m seeing .php pages, .asp pages, and WordPress installed in a sub-directory
   on your site, So the “index.php” in your WordPress URL’s, is probably what is
   actually allowing you to use alternate, or “almost pretty” permalinks. Some reference
   material regarding permalinks:[ Using Permalinks](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/htaccess-37/?output_format=md)
   and [PATHINFO: “Almost Pretty” ](http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks#PATHINFO:_.22Almost_Pretty.22)
   permalinks.

 * Many thanks.
 * All I need to do now is understand how it works!!!
 * Regards
