• Hello,
I just uploaded a newly created .htaccess file to the root of my server and had the following error message when trying to view my blog:

    500 Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, root@localhost and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

What just happened here? Any help would be great.
    Thanks!

  • You have an error in your .htaccess. Delete it and you should be able to access your blog again.

thanks iridiax, I did it and my blog works fine, but it didn’t solve my “pretty permalinks” option. I called my hosting provider and they told me that I have some htaccess conflict with other htaccess files in other directories. How can I find the rogue htaccess files and change them to fix this issue. thanks!

The .htaccess file most likely to be causing trouble would be one closer to the root level of your website. However, you can get these errors with only the .htaccess in your WordPress directory if something in it is incorrect.
