I am trying to figure out how to let my blog readers submit articles of their own to be included in my blog. (aftor being moderated of course). Are there any plugins that enable such a feature? (or maybe it is built in and I am missing it?)

In your Options -> Writing, set "Newly registered members:" to " May submit drafts for review".

Then, in Options -> General, check the option labelled "Anyone can register".

But isn't there any way to let members submit an item without it having to be a comment to an item that's already there? In other words, can't they just start a new thread? (They would identify it as belonging in one of my categories.)

    umm just tried the following

In your Options -> Writing, set "Newly registered members:" to " May submit drafts for review".

I do not have that option

Below are the options I do have?

    code start

Size of the post box: lines
Formatting: Users should use the visual rich editor by default
Convert emoticons like :-) and :-P to graphics on display
WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
    Default post category:
    Writing by e-mail

To post to WordPress by e-mail you must set up a secret e-mail account with POP3 access. Any mail received at this address will be posted, so it’s a good idea to keep this address very secret. Here are three random strings you could use: e3a2a, 3be07, 2d38a.
    Mail server:
    Login name:
    Default post by mail category:
    Update Services

When you publish a new post, WordPress automatically notifies the following site update services. For more about this, see Update Services on the Codex. Separate multiple service URIs with line breaks.

    code end

As you can see i have no
set "Newly registered members:" to " May submit drafts for review"
