how to use udate_option

    Hi,
    i am new to wordpress plugin development and unable to understand how and where to use <strong>update_option</strong> in the plugin development to update database.
    It will be helpful if someone can refer some detail tutorial about this function.
    i have readout codex explanation but unable to understand it.
