    In the Twenty Thirteen demo, there is a milkshake gallery. can anyone please help me by telling me how they achieved this? Or perhaps there is a login to the demo? Or perhaps source files?

    Thank you in advance for any help on this matter.

    Just make a WP gallery as usual,
    http://codex.wordpress.org/The_WordPress_Gallery

    and mark that post with gallery post format (checkbox on the right of editing screen).

    For Twentythirteen, posts with gallery post format when listed in blog home or archive page will be shown only the gallery, and no other part of post content.

    followed the steps but it doesnt show as a black background, images is somewhat embedded on a post

    do i need to install a certain plugin to accomplish sa sample post?

    I am also not able to get the gallery to work. My gallery behaves like a plain ol’ gallery: no varied photo sizes, no lightbox-type display when I click on a thumbnail. Any ideas?

    Gallery post format has yellow #fbca3c background, not black.

    /* Gallery */
    .format-gallery {
    	background-color: #fbca3c;
    }

    What you described has nothing to do with gallery post format in general and also in Twentythirteen. That is additional functionality that you could get from plugin, and there are many of them. The “varied photo sizes” sounds like one of Jetpack’s feature in gallery type.
