Support » Developing with WordPress » How to use some features of the _s (underscores) component themes?

  • Hello,

    I am pretty new to theme development, but I feel I understand the core structure. Hoewver, I am trying to use the relatively new Components Underscores theme starters and I cannot quite figure out how to access some of the features that supposedly come with these.

    In particular, I am trying to use the Magazine and Portfolio starters. The magazine one says it has a “front-page template with a grid of featured images, and a two-column blog layout” but there is no documentation on how to set the featured images, or get the two-column blog to come up.

    Similarly, with the Porfolio theme, which is supposed to have a “gridded portfolio layout, a simple one-column blog template, and a large featured image header.”

    Is there any additional documentation somewhere? Or can someone shed some light on how to make use of these features?

  • As it is now, you’re basically expected to dig into the code and figure it out for yourself.

    It’s important to note that Underscores is an Automattic product, so any special features (like featured content or portfolio functionality) is likely handled by Jetpack.

    While there may not be theme-specific documentation, there is documentation for the Jetpack features it uses on the Jetpack website.

    In the magazine starter theme, we can find the following code in inc/jetpack.php:

    add_theme_support( 'featured-content', array(
    	'filter'	 => 'test_get_featured_posts',
    	'max_posts'  => 20,
    	'post_types' => array( 'post', 'page' ),
    ) );

    Here’s the documentation for the featured content module.

    Similar deal in the portfolio theme. You can find documentation on using that under Custom Content Types.

    Hope this helps!
