How to use post Image format?

  • Firstly, I know how to add an image to the text editor via the “Add Media” button and via “featured image” on right side of editor.

When a post format is set to “image” do we need to put the image in Featured Image, or add it to the text editor via “Add Media”?

If the answer to this is to add the image to the text editor, what is the point of even have a “image” format.

The difference being that in the blog home or archive page normal(standard) post automatically shows featured image along with content, but post assigned with image format would only show content (that is expected to have 1 image in there along with its description).

My take on post format is that it’s confusing and of little use. It’s possible that post format itself would be taken out of core soon.
