Support » Fixing WordPress » How to type in Japanese?

  • Hello there, I’ve been using for quite time. I’m using the english edition, and it seems doesn’t support japanese encoding. All hiragana/katakana/kanji you wrote eventually become “????” when displayed in the blog.

    I wonder if I need to tweak something for this to work? Thanks in advance.

  • If you didn’t mess with the default encoding (utf-8) – it should work for any language.
    Also, is this a new install? An upgrade? What version? How do you input the Japanese characters: copy or type?

    calvinms- Did you ever get your kanji issue resolved? Seems that I’m having the same issue after importing my hosted blog to my Bluehost domain (

    If this helps, I did the “one-touch” WP install from my host, did not touch the default encoding (utf-8) and I am pasting the characters from a word doc. I also get the “??” after posting. This previously worked on my blog.

    Thank you.

    I actually have resolved, I didn’t aware some people still have this problem.

    Try removing these lines from your wp.config.php (backup first)

    define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘utf8’);
    define(‘DB_COLLATE’, ”);

    If I remembered correctly, this one should be enough solution for all non-latin encoding. 🙂

    UTF8 is not the same as latin encoding, you should be able to display japanese characters in UTF8 just fine.

    Hello ,
