I just want to transfer wordpress from my desktop to my laptop so I can contine developing it. I thought it would be as easy as using the export/import tool. I have a fresh Mamp and wordpress all ready to go on the laptop but wordpress is asking me to use a plugin that wants ftp info to import my xml file. I am not importing from an established blog just computer to computer. So how is this done?

Just download the plugin to your laptop, unpack it and drop the plugin's folder into wp-content/plugins.

I installed the plugin through wordpress. It asks me for hostname , ftp and ftp password. I am not trying to import an existing blog; just to continue developing a site. I don't have this info because the site resides in my mamp on my desktop.

can you hookup your two computers? then transfer...
or do a backup of the original, and import that into new one.
