How to tell if it's slow server or slow WordPress?

    Hi,

    My sites have been sporadic when loading for the past four years. Sometimes it can take up to 10 minutes for a page to load. I also have noticed that sometimes when a page is hanging, I can simply refresh the page and then the page will load fine…..sometimes. I’ve learned to just ignore it and go do something else till the page actually loads, but it’s driving our customers crazy. I have been battling with this to no avail for the last four years with little to no improvement.

    My host says that it’s not them….they had me do a few trace routes and even though it took the page 5 minutes to load while doing the trace on that particular site, they said it wasn’t a server side issue. I personally think that they are full of BS but don’t really know for sure. I’m running WP 3.1.3, using Super Cache which works great when the pages are actually loading. All the databases are optimized. All graphics are compressed before we upload them and then we also use smush.it on top of the compression. I’ve tried disabling all plugins and reverting to the default theme but still have the same issues.

    The sites don’t have a lot of traffic either and were on a dedicated server for about 5 months but I noticed the same issues so reverted back to a shared.

    I tried installing wp-tuner to see if I could pinpoint the problem but it crashed the installation with a fatal error message.

    How do I pinpoint whether it is a server or WordPress issue? I am running a number of traceroutes and I will post the results here in case it might help 🙂

    Your permalink on the sites shown is category/. this can cause poor performance on sites with many posts
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks#Structure_Tags
    http://digwp.com/2011/06/dont-use-postname/

    something with number like year/post-name or id/post-name would be a better choice.

    if the permalink is not the cause put
    <?php echo $wpdb->num_queries; ?> <?php _e('queries'); ?>. <?php timer_stop(1); ?> <?php _e('seconds'); ?> into the footer of one on the sites to check the number of queries to generate a page
