• I’m new to WP and can’t figure out how to stop the dozzens of spam comments that get sent to my blog every week. I haven’t received a single legit comments since setting me up, and I’d just like to turn the comments feature off so I don’t keep getting these things in my mailbox to approve.

I went to Settings and unchecked the Comments box but they’re still coming. HELP! Now what do I do?

Comments can be turned on or off on a per-post basis. You need to edit each post and turn the comments and pings off on that post itself.

However, just activate Akismet to stop spam. Bad Behavior is good too, as is the Simple Trackback Validator. Why disable comments when you can simply disable the spam?

You’ve got the Akismet plugin in your installation by default, you might want to get that apikey and turn it on.

Alternatelly, you can click on extend on top of this page, click ‘plugins’ and find the Bad Behavior plugin, which I personally use in combination with JSpamblock. There’s plenty of anti-spam plugins.

Thanks. As I said, I’m new to this and really not familiar with using WP or the plugins or other cool things.

    How do I activate Akismet?

    Thanks for the help!!

There’s also a section under “options” then “discussion” where you can enter in certain words that are banned from being used in comments. That keeps most spammers out from my blog. Things like “refinance” and “manhood” and whatnot. Also there’s a plugin called “bannage” that you can use to ban a specific IP address if a lot of the spam is coming from one person.

    How do I activate Akismet?

Go to “plugins”, find Akismet and click “activate” 🙂
But you need an api-key to do that, but it’s all there.
