How to show “Last Updated On” tag on posts?

I am trying to add a tag in the footer of each blog (the footer which holds the original publish date and the number of comments) to show when it was last updated.

I tried copying many different variations of a php script to the blog post entry page but nothing works. I might be putting the code in the wrong place. Can anyone help? Thank you.
