As long as you have the general WooCommerce guest checkout option then the user should be forced to login or create an account with your site from the review page that they are returned to after signing in to PayPal.

Are you saying that is not working for you?

Thanks so much for your quick reply. Here’s what works and why I’m confused (in case it helps anyone else):

    1) Yes, if I just click the PayPal Express button, it does complete the Sandbox transaction and return for registration. That does capture the member AND add the associated member status, thank you.

    2) All last night, I was trying to get rid of the “proceed to checkout” cart button and the “checkout” button on the shopping cart icon hover. Everything I read said those buttons were removed by the plugin (or is there an option I didn’t select?). It was clicking those that was sending me to the registration page before payment.

The PayPal button will only replace the Proceed to Checkout button if Express Checkout is the only payment gateway you have enabled. If any other gateways are enabled then you will still get the regular Proceed to Checkout button because people we need that in order to checkout some different way besides PayPal.

Maybe you have/had some other gateway enabled..??

Oddly, no (it may be a theme override).

However, now that you’ve explained this, I am going to allow checks because I can remove site registration from the checkout page in my theme and prevent access before checks have cleared. So thanks for that!

If it’s helpful at all to others, here’s a very quick summary of how to prep Woocommerce BEFORE you set up the plugin (I read the documentation and followed it carefully, but this part wasn’t clear until this exchange):

    1) Install the plugin
    2) Go to Woocommerce “Checkout” tab
    3) Under “Checkout Options,” disable Guest Checkout if you require users to return and register after purchase (e.g., to complete a membership sign-up)
    4) Under PayPal, disable the PayPal Standard option
    5) Also disable any other active payment gateways (this will remove the default “checkout” buttons from any pages in your payment pipeline)
    5) Under PayPal Express button, enable PP Express and follow each of the steps on the documentation page to configure. (https://www.angelleye.com/create-paypal-sandbox-account/)
    6) If you choose to enable other payment gateways, you might want to use the Woo Docs to customize form-billing and form-shipping to edit elements non-PayPal buyers see (for instance, I removed the registration option and will manually add members after checks clear).
    7) Rate the plugin highly and comment on the author’s awesome support
    8) Donate to the plugin!

@angelleyes, I defer to you for corrections, and I hope it’s a useful summary of the WooCommerce prep for this excellent plugin.

@dmitcha, that’s awesome, thanks! I’m glad you were able to get things working well.

I appreciate your feedback and will see about getting our documentation updated to reflect some of the things that are not clear. I will definitely refer to this thread when we get that done.

I appreciate your kind words, and yes, reviews/donations are always welcome! Thanks so much!

Hi, I’m facing the issue where after a customer returns from the paypal express checkout process and returns to my website to review, there is no area to register for an account.

Have I not enabled this correctly?\

Any help will be much appreciated!

You need to set that under the WooCommerce checkout settings. You’ll see an option for “Enable Guest Checkout”. This needs to be disabled so that WooCommerce requires a login, and when this is the case, the PayPal Express Checkout review screen (after being returned to the site from PayPal’s review) should require the account creation just like the Woo checkout page would.

Please check that and get back to me.

Yes, the option is disabled, however, after going through PayPal Express and returning to the site, there is no section to create an account.

    Any advice is much appreciated!

Also, if I were to want customers to be able to check out as guests, there should at least be an option to register if they want to, but this is also not available. If I enable guest checkout, there is nothing that allows them to choose to register on the checkout review page after returning from PayPal Express.

    I’m really at a loss 🙁

What version of our plugin are you using? We had all of this resolved a few versions back and have not had any other complaints about it since.

    (@raeleewp)

Where am I able to check the version? I really have no idea why this is not working for me.

It should be the latest, as I only started using this about 2 months ago.

    (@angelleye)

Well yeah, it should be the latest then. You can verify by checking the Plugins page in your WordPress admin panel. It will list all your current plugins and their versions, and it will also so you if you have any updates available.

    (@raeleewp)

Hi again, I’m so so sorry, please ignore the issues. I went to check my plugins, and I had the wrong plugin activated this entire time!

I cannot believe how blind I was. Your plugin is working 100% as it should when it comes to the review page.

Thanks so much for your replies!

    (@angelleye)

Ah, yup, that’ll do it. 🙂

Glad you got it worked out!

May I find out though, how I can make the paypal page look like the one in your screenshots?

The current one I have looks completely different and does not give the option to add a gift message even though I checked that box in the settings.

    Thanks so much!
