How to set up portfolio page template

Hello,

I’m new to wordpress.org and the orvis theme. I am trying to set up my first portfolio page using the “portfolio page template” but can’t figure out how to insert images so that it shows up in any sort of “template”, or in any manner similar to the orvis preview. I can only find documentation on setup for wordpress.com not .org. Are there any tutorials or documentation I’m missing covering how to properly use the portfolio template?

I have jetpack installed and activated.
