how to set pagination plugin in home page

    Hi
    i have a issue has to be solved urgently.i have use pagenavi plugin in my website. The pagination plugin is working fine i used with it custom query.Page 1 and 2 are working fine but when i click the page 3 it throws me 404 error. i guess the problem is with max_num_pages of wordpress. i have used two different plugins (wp-paging and df-pagination) but exactly same error occurs so i think that the error is not the plugin but with the theme files. so please help me.
