How to rewire the uploads for media library

I had three blogs and I migrated them to wp3.0 multisite and I got it so it uploads and successfully links to any new images going forward. I moved the old uploads folders to wp-content/blogs.dir/<blog id>/files/uploads but i would like to be able to manipulate the old images through the media library interface. New uploads seem to be going into monthly subfolders and the old ones are all in uploads. However only the files uploaded since the migration show up in the admin interface. I can’t find any thing in the database where it knows about these uploaded files other than the directory setting. How can I make my new wordpress find the old uploads?
